Welcome to Why Spanish Works! I created this site to help English speakers understand the Spanish words, phrases, and slang they actually hear in conversations, music, TV, and everyday life across the Spanish-speaking world — not just the textbook version.

Learning a language from a textbook can only take you so far. What made the biggest difference for me was digging into the “why” behind an expression: where it comes from, the image it evokes for a native speaker, and how it actually gets used in real conversation. That is the approach I try to bring to every article on this site.

Why I Write This Site

I have spent a great deal of time studying Spanish and immersing myself in Spanish-language media and culture, and I still remember how confusing it was to find clear, practical explanations in English. Why Spanish Works is the resource I wish I had when I started.
